  10. OPTIMIZE FOR NEAR ME SEARCHES
  11. USE NATURAL LANGUAGE TO EARN FEATURED SNIPPETS

1. USE NATURAL LANGUAGE IN YOUR CONTENT

For example: Instead of using “solar panel cost phoenix” users would search “How much do solar panels cost in Phoenix”

Include these keywords in your title, content, post tags to optimize for these conversational keywords properly.

2. MAKE YOUR FAQ PAGES LONG

According to Brian, Google loves question and answer content to serve featured snippets and answer user queries. Brian states to keep your answers short and sweet as most of the featured snippets are only 29 words or less. Answering a bunch of question on your faq pages is a great way to optimize your website for voice search.

3. USE QUESTIONS KEYWORDS IN YOUR CONTENT

(Who, How, When, Where, Total, Why & What) question topics are usually highly searched and can bring you a ton of traffic. This is also another chance for you to optimize for voice search and grab yourself a couple of those featured snippets.

4. USE RESOURCES TO FIND QUESTIONS

On Answer The Public you can type in any keyword and get a list of the most asked questions that contain that keyword. This is especially helpful for building out the FAQ sections of your website because this is where most featured snippets come from.

5. KEEP YOUR ANSWERS 29 WORDS OR LESS

The average length of featured snippets on Google search is 29-word results.

This is why it is important to answer user’s questions in 29 words or less.

Results from voice search are about 2 times more likely to come from an FAQ page or page with a lot of questions and answers. Almost half of voice search answers from Google come from a featured snippet.

Keep in mind you can include keywords in the content of your website as well or create individual blog posts that answer that question only. We’ve scored multiple featured snippets just by answering a single question on a single blog posts.

Answer a lot of questions on your site and you are more likely to gain a featured position.

6. INCLUDE FILLER KEYWORDS IN YOUR QUESTIONS

Filler keywords like “for”, “on”, “me”, “to”, “and” & “the” give you a better chance of being show for a voice search because those are natural language keywords.

For example: Instead of “optimize website for voice search” use this “How do I optimize my website for Voice Search”

7. WRITE FOR A 7th-9th GRADE READING LEVEL

If you need help with making sure you are writing for the right reading level, use Readability Formulas website. Simply copy and paste your content to get an idea of what reading level you are writing at.

8. INCREASE YOUR DOMAIN AUTHORITY

Websites that have a lot of backlinks usually rank better for voice search. Brian says the average domain rating that ranks best for voice search is 77. You can check what domain rating you have by visiting https://ahrefs.com/dashboard/metrics

9. WRITE LONG FORM CONTENT

You are more likely to show up for a voice search query or featured snippet if your content is 2300 words or longer.

10. OPTIMIZE FOR NEAR ME SEARCHES

Optimize your webpage for near me keywords. For example: If a customer was searching for a local pizza shop near the mall, they would search something like this “Hey Google, show me pizza shops near PV mall” etc. Is your business near major parks, Near major cross streets, near major attractions, near counties or near other business? If so, add that into your content.

11. USE NATURAL LANGUAGE TO EARN FEATURED SNIPPETS

Natural language keywords in Videos pull featured snippets with video more often. For example: Instead of “video seo” use this “how to rank videos on Google”.

12. FORMAT YOUR PAGE PROPERLY

Brian states that links aren’t as important as formatting and language. And, I couldn’t agree more!! Sometimes we find a piece of competitor content that is extremely long but doesn’t have any headings, citations or pictures. We create a similar piece of content but add headings for easy eye scanning, citations to prove to Google that where we got the information from and info graphic pictures to make the page not so bland. Sometimes we can beat a site with a higher domain authority just by formatting our article better. Using page jumps also helps create a better experience for the user as they can click links to take them to parts of the information they are interested in the most.
